'One Art' Analysis Essay

The Villanelle ‘One art’ written by Elizabeth Bishop includes many stylistic elements and has deeper meanings than first noticed. Elizabeth Bishop had a harsh life when she was young. She lost her father when she was 8 months old and her mother was mentally ill in 1916. Bishop’s mother died in 1934 and Elizabeth Bishop used to write many writings about the time of her mother’s struggles. During her life as an American poet, she wrote many poems and short stories and ‘One Art’ is one of them. There are many parts of the poem to analyze and they are the purpose, language/format, and the meaning of the poem.

When someone writes any form of writing, there is always a meaning to it. So, there would be a meaning to ‘One Art’ written by Elizabeth Bishop. In one’s opinion, I think that this poem has two meanings to it. First of all, the first meaning might be that the speaker is trying to tell the audience of the poem how much she loves the ‘you’ in the poem. The line “Even losing you (the joking voice, a gesture I love)” shows that. In addition in most poems, the first stanza and the last stanza are the places where the writer in makes his/her point. This fact shows that one of the points she wanted to make is to show how much she loves the ‘you’ the poem. Furthermore, the writer could have been trying to say if somebody loses something, that person might lose a bigger thing and wouldn’t be aware of it. The two lines “The art of losing isn’t hard to master;” and “to be lost that their loss is no disaster” shows the point which I think the writer made.

Not only does the meaning of the poem take great part in analyzing poetry but also the use of language is very important. The poem ‘One Art’ has a very unique tone. The poem is not a happy or a funny poem but it is a depressive and a negative poem. However, the tone that the writer used is a sarcastic tone. The poem doesn’t sound serious or depressing but it is more sarcastic. As said before, ‘One Art’ is a villanelle. A villanelle is a poem which consists 19 lines and it has 6 stanzas in total; the first 5 stanzas have 3 lines and the last stanza has 4 lines. The rhymes are repeated according to the refrains. The first line of the first stanza is repeated as the last line of the second and fourth stanzas. Like any other poems, this poem has also used poetic language such as enjambment, simile, image, and metaphors. Enjambment is used throughout the whole poem. Both image and metaphor are used at the same time. For example, on the second last stanza, it said “I lost two cities…” We don’t lose cities or continents it is a metaphor for something and also it is an image as we can picture the writer losing all these objects.

It was said that when someone writes any form of writing, there is a meaning to it. Similar to that line above, when someone writes any form of writing, there has to be an audience, the writer, and a purpose of writing. So, in the poem ‘One Art’ written by Bishop, there has to be an audience, the speaker and a purpose. In one’s opinion, I think the speaker is Bishop herself and the audience is her dead mother. Bishop’s mother died in 1934 when she was young so she used to write a lot of pieces about her mother. I think that this poem is also one of those pieces. The purpose of this poem could be that she is missing her mother and wants her back. In addition, Bishop showed in the poem how much she loved her mother saying even though I lose these (door keys, mother’s watch, three loved houses, two cities, two rivers and a continent), I can’t lose you.

In conclusion, there are in a poem, there are three parts to analyze and they are the purpose, writer and audience, the meaning of the poem and the language and the format of the poem. In this villanelle ‘One Art’ written by Elizabeth Bishop, one’s opinion was that this could be showing love to somebody and that somebody could be Bishop’s mother and that this poem made lots of use of image, enjambment, rhyme, simile and metaphors.

The fact that Mary Maloney wants to do something for his tired and depressed looking husband and the fact that she knows when Patrick Maloney was going to come shows that she actually had respect for him and loved him. Also the reaction of Mary Maloney when her husband told her that his leaving her also showed how shocking it was for her and how much she loved him. There were phrases such as 'almost as a sunbather feels the sun' and 'she couldn’t feel her feet touching the floor'

6. Patrick Maloney was going to tell his wife that he is going to leave her. This might be because Patrick is in a love affair with another woman. Since Patrick Maloney mentioned words such as "I'll give you the money…" and " I wouldn't be good for my job", he is trying to divorce.

7. The part of this book when Mary Maloney listens to the conversation that 4 policemen are eating the murder weapon or the leg of lamb is very ironic. The policemen were supposed to find the murder weapon instead they were eating the weapon and getting rid of it.

Personally, I find Mary's calmness and care in working out her alibi after the crime is believable because since Mary Maloney was so acting well when she went to the grocer, it made the policemen believe that she could have never done the crime. After the detective went to the grocer, he believed that it was impossible that she committed the crime because the grocer seeing how happy she was to give Patrick Maloney a good supper.

Life contracts and death is expected,as in a season of autumn.
The soldier falls.
He does not become a three-days personage, imposing his separation, calling for pomp.
Death is absolute and without memorial, as in a season of autumn, when the wind stops,
when the wind stops and, over the heavens, the clouds go, nevertheless,in their direction.

The poem shows that death always occurs to someone no matter what. Also, it shows that death doesn't leave anything if you die, as time flows, you want to memorized by anyone. This is showed by 'Life contracts and death is expected…'. Even if you die, the world just flows on as nothing happened. This in the poem is showed by 'The clouds go, nevertheless, in their direction. It is a very depressing poem but I think this poem is a very realistic poem. I think it might be written in a time where there was war or it is during war because the author mentions soldiers instead of just people. Though this poem is negative and depressive it is interesting how he expressed his ideas metaphorically. The example would be: ' As in a season of autumn. The solider falls' this means soldiers die like the leaves fall.

Funeral Blues

I think this poem Funeral Blues is a poem which a guy loving another guy (gay). And I think that it is saying how much this guy loved the other guy by using expressions such as 'he was my North, my South, my East and West..'. The author could be same as the persona or may be it could be written in a perspective in which the author is pretending to be a guy loving another male. I think this poem shows depression because his lover died. He is saying there is no hope in himself anymore because of the death of his lover. By this poem he is showing both how much he loved this other male person and also how much he is depressed to face his lover's death.

I agree with the poem because actually these days teenagers tend to speak in a more informal tone and in the past, there was slang but not badly as it is nowadays.
Advice to the teenagers that use of formal language is needed and you should use it. Also it could be a warning that formal language is need for teenagers.

Do Not Go Gentle Into that Good Night

Personally, I think this poem is to convince people who are about to die and I think it includes his father. The author thinks that everyone should try their best to live before they die because you only live life once so it is precious. This poem is metaphorical; light being living and night being death. If it is a metaphor the title 'Do not Go Gentle Into that Good Night' shows don't accept death so easily. Also since this poem is written in Villanelle form, this is to strongly emphasize the idea of this poem. I think there is more meaning to this poem however, I do not get every part of the metaphorical phrases. But however, I think the main point of this poem is to 'fight to live' and 'do not accept death easily'. I think the important phrases of this poem is the repeating parts which are 'do not go gentle into that good night' and 'rage, rage against the dying of the light'
